2022 Pennant Hills Alto NSW Open

This past week we had the pleasure of hosting the NSW Open here at Thornleigh Squash and Fitness. This event attracted 137 players from across the globe and state with 30 of the players particpating in the Men's and Woman's 3k PSA Challenger event.


The PSA kicked off the tournament on the Thursday with the round 1 matches staring at midday. There were no upsets in the first rounds with the top 8 in both draws moving through to the quarters. The Woman's draw saw the top 8 move through in straight sets, one notable highlight was local junior superstar, Maggie Goodman having her debut in the PSA. Meanwhile the Men's top 8 saw a couple of 5 set battles, notably, the #1 seed Yannick Welhelmi from Switzerland beating Aussie player Damon Macmillan in a tense 45m 5-setter.


Quarterfinals were played on the Friday which saw the Woman's PSA top 4 move through to the semifinals, #2 seed Xin Ying Yee from Malaysia had a tough fight for her spot against Hong Kong player [7] Ching Hei Fung in a tough 45m 5 set battle. In the men's the top 3 players moved through to the semifinals in straight sets, while aussie Commonwealth games star, [5] Rhys Dowling took out the #4 seed in four to secure his spot.

Semi Finals kicked off at midday on the Saturday which attracted a large crowd of both players in the graded event a well as local squash enthusiests. The Woman's PSA really started to heat up with both matches being tense 5 setters, [2] Xin Ying Yee and [3] Aria Azman saw the fourth game being down to a win by two, however, Xin Ying was able to regain form and take the fifth 11-4 to secure her place in the finals. [2] Celine Walser and [1] Cheng Nga Ching had their fifth match going to a tense ‘win by two’ situation. Cheng Nga was able to hold composure and claim the final spot with a 12-10 win in the fifth. The Men’s semifinals started off with #1 seed Yannick Wilhelmi taking on #3 seed Abhay Singh in a tense back and forth battle that went to five. Yannick claimed the lead early, however, Abhey came back taking the 2nd and 3rd with Abhey getting the fifth 11-7. Our Australian lad, Rhys Dowling started the match with a difficult 10-12 loss to Swiss Robin Gadola, he was able to comeback in the second claiming the win 11-8, however went down in four.


The Woman's final kicked off at midday with #1 seed Cheng Nga Ching (MAS) and #2 seed fellow Malaysian Xin Ying Yee. Xin Ying Yee took the lead early on but Cheng Nga Ching came back fighting winning the 2nd 16-14 and the 3rd 9-11. However, Xin Ying Yee came back to claim the title winning the 4th and 5th.

The Men's final followed starting at 1pm against #3 seed Abhay Singh from India and #2 seed Robin Gadola from Switzerland. The match started off physical with Abhay clinching the first match 15-13 and the second 11-9. Robin came back fighting winning the third 11-1 however, Abhay took the lead in the fourth and was able to claim the title winning 11-8.

The NSW Open also attracted over 100 graded seniors and juniors that particpated over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was great to have so many familar and new faces at the club and enjoying some great sqaush.
